Divorce
At the law office of Margaret Alexander, we help people move forward with their lives and help families, particularly children, come through divorce emotionally healthy. Preparing children for the divorce process is important, as is keeping their best interests at heart throughout. We will work closely with your family and keep the focus on your children, where it belongs. We have extensive experience representing the rights of children and we know from years of experience how divorce can impact them.
Custody
Our practice remains focused on the best interests of children in family law disputes. A divorce and custody battle can be an awful time for children. They need somebody looking out for them: that is where we come in.
Each parent's lifestyle and choices they make after a divorce can have a drastic effect on custody cases. It is important to put children and their best interest first and get through the emotional part of divorce while maintaining a stable, nurturing and supportive environment for your children. We will help you make the lifestyle decisions conducive to keeping your children emotionally healthy during this difficult time.
Modifications
Sometimes the circumstances that existed in your life when your child custody and child support order was entered change drastically over the years. If there have been substantial changes in the circumstances of either parent or their child, we can help you obtain a new order or modify your existing agreement to better match your current situation.
Marital Property
Texas law provides for a presumption that any assets accumulated during the marriage are community property and subject to division by the Court. Sometimes a spouse enters into a marriage bringing property or monies of their own. These assets would be called "separate property assets" and, if it can be proven that the spouse had them prior to the marriage, they are then protected from division. Either spouse can petition the court for a division of more than fifty percent of the assets accumulated during the marriage for various reasons.
In addition to the primary practice areas listed above, we skillfully represent clients in cases involving:
- Adoption
- Paternity suits
- Grandparent's rights
- Stepparent's rights
